Anya has started weaning off the c-pap; she also is
tolerating it a LOT better. I was able to hold her while she was wide awake. For
some deranged reason my mind kept repeating the ‘Pinky and the Brain’ theme
song, so that is what I sang to her. (Pinky, are you thinking what I am
thinking? I think so Brain, but where are we going to get kumquats of that
size? Narf!)
I tried explaining the series to Anya’s nurse which led her to
change the subject and say we needed to get some books to read to her. Anyone
who knows me at all knows I love to read; but I have never got into reading to
babies before they can look at the pictures. Singing slightly inappropriate
wacky theme songs though is totally game in my book. I am not alone in this;
Adam frequently lulls Anya to sleep by humming ‘Zelda’s Lullaby’. To answer
your question, yes, we did do all of this with Arwen and she is completely
normal. So far.
Anya is starting to get her voice, and it is really cute. It
is a mix of a goat, a baby alligator (totally appropriate, as we are in
University of Florida Gator country), and a very small duck. She is not at full
strength yet; it is still a very soft sound. The intubation tube causes
swelling in the vocal cords, it takes a while to improve. Monitoring devices
are being taken away, she was taken off her somanetics a few days ago; it is an
oxygen monitor for the brain and kidneys. (Relatively new device, there is some
research in the works, really interesting, but I won’t go into detail here.
Requests for more information will be honored in a future blog though, if
anyone is interested)
Tomorrow she may start some occupational therapy; they will
help stretch out her neck, since it was in one position for so long. I am eager
to get to the point where I can pick her up without help, she will need to get
rid of a lot of equipment before that is possible. This is the part again where
I pray for patience!
