We are pretty much just hanging out until Anya has surgery
on Friday. The vent is down a little, but they really won’t work on weaning it
until after the surgery. Tonight we spoke to Ana, one of the fellows, and she
said they might consider another step in weaning her off the vent. I don’t
remember the name exactly, but it uses a mask and can have some additional
support that is not possible with c-pap. Anya was exchanging air wonderfully
just before she crashed the other night, so she definitely has the lungs
capacity to breathe for herself, she just needs more reserve. Vent to c-pap may
be too dramatic of a change for her; she needs more conditioning before she can
do so much work. It is like running a marathon without any training; you may do
OK for a few minutes, but not very long.
I tried to hold her for a while today only to put her back
after a few minutes. She just isn’t comfortable being held, especially when she
in on the vent. She was wide awake and comfortable when lying in bed, when I started
to hold her she was irritable and struggled to get comfortable. I think the
intubation tube irritates her, gagging her so she can’t relax. It also seems like
it is harder for her to breathe when being held. It is sad not to hold her, but it is much
sadder to hold her knowing she would be more comfortable lying in bed. As soon
as she was back in bed she was more comfortable and had the energy to look at
me instead of just breathing.
Anxious to get the surgery over, hopeful that it will be a
big piece of the puzzle.
